Medical Use of Cannabis Flowers: Legal by Prescription

Cannabis flowers are legally available for medical use—but under strict conditions.

In 2018, the UK legalized medical cannabis, including cannabis flower (also known as bud or herb), for certain conditions such as:

  • Chronic pain

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)

  • Severe epilepsy

  • Cancer-related symptoms

To access medical cannabis flowers legally, patients must:

  • Obtain a private prescription from a licensed specialist

  • Go through a registered clinic

  • Use only products approved by the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency)

Note: The NHS rarely prescribes cannabis flower, making private clinics the primary option for legal access.

What Are Cannabis Flowers?

Cannabis flowers are the harvested buds of the female cannabis plant, containing the highest concentrations of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol)—the plant’s two main active compounds.

Common types of cannabis flower available in UK clinics include:

  • High-THC strains (used for chronic pain, appetite issues)

  • Balanced THC:CBD strains (for mood and neurological disorders)

  • High-CBD strains (for anxiety, inflammation)

The flower is typically vaporized, not smoked, to meet clinical guidelines.
